Crucible tongs are the pair you reach for when something is coming out of a furnace or off a burner. The tips are serrated and shaped to bite into the curved side of a porcelain crucible, so the piece stays put while you move it rather than rolling loose in the jaws.

The joint is nonbinding, which matters more than it sounds. A tong that binds forces you to squeeze harder to keep hold, and squeezing harder on hot porcelain is how crucibles get chipped. This pattern stays smooth through the full range of the handle, and the finger openings are large enough to use with the gloves most labs wear at ignition temperatures.

The steel is nickel plated, which is what makes it a high temperature tool rather than a general purpose one. Bare steel scales and discolors with repeated heating. The plating holds up to the cycling and keeps the tips from picking up residue that could contaminate the next sample.

At 10 inches the handle puts a comfortable distance between your hand and the heat while still giving you the control to set a crucible down gently on a triangle or a ring stand.

Common uses: transferring crucibles to and from a muffle furnace, moving covers during ashing, and handling evaporating dishes off a hot plate.
